For many people, alcohol is just the buzz needed to relax and unwind. However, excessive drinking can have serious health consequences, from liver damage to addiction. If you're looking for a way to cut back on alcohol, herbs can be a great substitute. Here are some plant friends that can help you cut back on liquor.


Kava: Kava is a traditional herb that's been used in the South Pacific for centuries as a way to promote relaxation and social connection. It's often used as a substitute for alcohol because it can produce similar effects, such as reduced anxiety and increased sociability. Kava can be prepared as a tea or taken in supplement form.

Kava Colada Mocktail

Ingredients: 

2 cups of coconut milk

1 cup of pineapple juice

1/4 cup of kava root powder

2 tablespoons of honey

Instructions:

Combine coconut milk, pineapple juice, kava root powder, and honey in a blender. Blend until smooth, then pour over ice and garnish with a slice of pineapple.

Damiana Iced Tea

Ingredients: 

Damiana dried leaves or tea

Honey or agave nectar 

Lemon Wedge

Instructions:

Brew 1 bag of damiana tea or dried leaves in 8 ounces of hot water for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bag and add ice. Squeeze a lemon and sweeten with honey or agave nectar to taste.

Lemon Balm Spritzer

Ingredients: 

1/2 cup of lemon balm tea or dried leaves 

1/2 cup of sparkling water

1/4 cup of pomegranate juice

Instructions:

Brew 1 bag of lemon balm tea or dried leaves in 8 ounces of hot water for twenty minutes to an hour. Combine lemon balm brew, sparkling water, and pomegranate juice in a glass filled with ice. Stir gently and garnish with a sprig of fresh lemon balm or lemon slice.
